PayPal Focus on Mobile (again)

Industry News: Thurs 12th March 2009

PayPal's previous attempt at the mobile payment market was in 2006/7, where the lack of clarity in the offering left both merchants and customers confused. It looks as though the company is rethinking it's approach.

BlackBerry App World, which launched last week, and its PayPal payment option developed by Research in Motion, indicate a significant push towards PayPal mobile payments.

CEO John Donohoe now confirms that PayPal will yet again focus on growing its shares in the mobile payment market. PayPal did invest in mobile payments a few years ago without great success, however the market is perhaps more ready this time around.

Over half of PayPal's new business, and their 175 million users, come directly from ebay, the plans to push the mobile aspect has prompted speculations that the company will split from eBay.
