NHS tackles the million pound business of missed appointments, or Did Not Attends (DNAs), by increasing the usage of SMS appointment reminders.
6.5 million appointments were, according to the BBC, missed in 2007-08. This is very serious problem costing the NHS a staggering £600 million a year.

SMS in perceived as effective method of reminding patients about appointments that are often booked so long in advance and therefore easy to miss.
Now UK Healthcare providers are being urged to make use of SMS marketing as a means of cost cutting. Several hospitals, such as Guy's and St Thomas' in London, are already using SMS reminders, which has lead to "significant improvements" according to the hospital.
