Acceptable Usage Policies for text messaging and Mobile Marketing

However you intent to use txt4ever it is important that you have a published policy on what that usage will be. The mobile phone is a very personal item that most people have with them most of the time. Thus, it is important to respect this and only send information that users have clearly agreed to and at times that are convenient to them. You also need to ensure that any information is held securely and you comply with the relevant data protection legislation. If you are sending marketing messages you need to ensure that you have met the relevant opt in requirements defined in the Ofcom regulations.

The following points are intended as a guide to developing your own policy:

  • Who?
Who will you be contacting – staff, service users, customers or potential customers?
  • What?
What will be you communicating – general communications, service information, announcements, offers or marketing?
  • How?
How will you be sending the information – by SMS, mobile web or applications?
  • When?
How often will you send information and at what times – for example ‘no more than once a month between 9am and 5pm’?
  • Where?
Where will the information be stored and how will you protect your users? Will the information be passed on to anyone, for example a different department in your organisation? How can users contact you if the have any concerns?
